Thin leather but they're genuine, good quality leather with a nice look and feel to them. I got these for a more Victorian style costume and they worked GREAT but I could see working well with all sorts of costumes from medieval fantasy to old West to Star Wars. They should wear reasonably well over time unless you're working concrete with them or something.They probably run just a little bit large. I bought XL and they're a tad big and almost none of my fingers reach the very tips which bugs me, but they didn't have an L in black at the time. If like me you're good wearing two sizes of nitrile gloves I'd recommend the smaller, but ymmv
